The Flint Firebirds spoiled the party in Owen Sound, edging the Attack in their OHL regular season opener.
Garrett Forrest made 43 saves and Maurizio Colella scored the shootout winner, as the Firebirds beat the Attack 4-3 Saturday night at J.D. McArthur Arena.
Flint led 2-0 after the first period. Nicolas Mattinen gave the Firebirds a 1-0 lead just 1:04 after puck drop with a shorthanded goal. Then Ethan Keppen made it 2-0 at 12:38 of the first period.
The Attack answered with goals from Jonah Gadjovich and Nick Suzuki in the second period. Gadjovich beat Forrest just past the midway mark, while Suzuki tallied with just over a minute remaining in the frame.
Owen Sound took its first lead 1:40 into the third on a Kevin Hancock goal.
Hunter Holmes notched his second of the season for Flint to tie the game 3-3.
Forrest made 43 saves in the win, while Zack Bowman stopped 24 in his Attack debut.
Owen Sound outshot Flint 46-27 while going 1 for 6 on the power play; Flint finished 0 for 3.
The Attack (0-0-0-1) play their next game Sept. 29 on the road against the Kitchener Rangers (1-1-0-0).
