Hawerchuk Takes Down Spirit
His OT goal helped snap Barrie's 4-game losing streak; he and Magwood had 3 points.
The Barrie Colts find themselves in the win column and it took some extra time to get the W.
Ben Hawerchuk's 2nd goal of the game gave the Colts 5-4 win over the visiting Saginaw Spirit in overtime on Thursday night.
Saginaw took a 1-0 lead in the first period before Barrie answered with goals from Zach Magwood, Curtis Douglas, and Hawerchuk to take a 3-1 lead.
For the 16-year-old Douglas, it was his first career OHL goal.
Brady Gilmour's goal cut the Colts' lead to 3-2 early in the second period then the Spirit had a 5-on-3 power play for 1:54 but Barrie was able to kill it off.
After Magwood's 2nd goal of the game made it 4-2 for the Colts, the Spirit got one from Kris Bennett and another from Hayden Hodgson to tie the game up at 4-4 and send the game into overtime.
Hawerchuk and Magwood each finished with 3 points while David Ovsjannikov made 27 saves in net for the Colts (13-24-4-1).
Hodgson also had a 3-point game while Brendan Bonello stopped 19 shots for the Spirit (15-20-6-2).
Saginaw had a goal on 4 power play chances, Barrie had 3 opportunities but didn't score.
The win snaps the Colts 4-game losing streak and will play the 2nd of 3 in a row on Friday night in Hamilton against the Bulldogs.
