The Provincial Junior Hockey League's Goderich Flyers Tweeted that they were looking to start 2017 on a fresh note, and they almost did.
A late rally fell short, as Goderich lost 3-2 in PJHL Pollock Division play at Hanover Tuesday.
With only 13 skaters available at P and H Centre, the Flyers held the Barons to a scoreless tie through two periods but Hanover's Jarrett Kuntz and Matt Shields scored 41 seconds apart in the first two minutes of the final frame.
Shields added a second goal at 8:28, and the game suddenly looked beyond reach for Goderich.
Earlier in the season, the Flyers had staged late rallies to make games close, and so they did again with Noah Kuno and Drew McKee setting up Riley Connors 25 seconds later.
Goderich's Tyler McCracken wrapped up the scoring from Tyler Stacey and Ryan Stulp with 8:35 left in the third period.
Flyers' goaltender Branden Bean had a busy night, making 40 saves while the Barons' Braeden Ellis steered aside 33 Goderich shots.
Hanover moves into a fourth-place tie with idle Mount Forest at 26 points -- both teams are one game under .500.
The Flyers visit Wingham Friday and return home to host the Barons at MRC Saturday, while Hanover hosts Mount Forest Friday.
Goderich goaltender Nathan Watson has been named the PJHL Miller Insurance Goaltender of the Month for December, turning in a 2-2-1 record and posting a .900 save percentage.
