Winterhawks win 13th straight

Saugeen Shores | by John Divinski

Saugeen Shores had little trouble with Shelburne.

Thirteen was not an unlucky number for the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks in WOAA Senior Hockey.

The Hawks notched their 13th consecutive win of the season with a 7-2 win over the visiting Shelburne Muskies Friday night.

Alex Penner led the way with two goals, with singles from Greg Thede, Bryan Kazarian, Brent MacDermid (who was playing in his 200th regular season game for the Hawks), Curtis Johnston and Trent Hawke.

The game got a little feisty near the end with a couple of fights breaking out.

Hawks coach Jim Grieve says he knew the Muskies would come to play aggressively but it also gave his squad an opportunity to put the puck in the net.

The Hawks peppered goalie Eddie Davie with 49 shots however, the Muskies could only muster 19 shots on Blake Sinclair for the whole game.

The Winterhawks next game is Friday, January 6th, as they host Lucknow Lancers.

Gametime at the Plex is 8:30pm.

The Hawks will also play at home on Saturday, January 7th, hosting the Mapleton Minto 81's.

Saturday's gametime at the Plex is 7:30pm.

Elsewhere in WOAA play Friday, the Clinton Radars beat the Tillsonburg Thunder 7-1.

The Elora Rocks/Shallow Lake Crushers game in Shallow Lake was cancelled because of the bad weather.
