It was a suspenseful few minutes for Cobourg’s Lucas Pichl as he waited by the 18th green to find out if he had won the 2016 Baka Wireless Ontario Public Player Championship, Aug. 31 from DiamondBack Golf Club in Richmond Hill.

Pichl, who began the round one-over after an opening round of 73, was in the second to last group of the day. He carded a second consecutive round of one-over (73) to finish with a tournament total of two-over (73-73-146).

With that, he needed to wait for the final group to finish to see where he stood. “I was very nervous,” said Pichl. “I was trying to calculate the numbers in my head and thinking that a four-over could beat me by one or that my two-stroke penalty on the first tee (during day one) could come back to bite me.”

Fortunately for Pichl, no one in the final group was able to card a lower tournament total and he claimed the 2016 Ontario Public Player Championship. Afterwards he talked about what it meant to him.  “It feels amazing. I haven’t won anything recently and to come out here and win from behind just feels great.”

Pichl was able to crush the ball off the tee this week and controlled his drives well, putting him in prime positions. “My driving off the tee saved me. This is a tight course, my putting could have been better but my game off the tee was great.”

Pichl made his mark on the front nine during the final round. He carded a pair of birdies and an eagle and was three-under at the turn. He played the back nine four-over but it was still good enough for the win.

Second place went to Ajax’s James Rim. Rim entered the day two-under and was three-under, for the day, as he got to the eighth hole. However, he quadruple bogeyed the hole and was one-over after nine. He played the back nine four-over, finishing the day five-over (77) and three-over (70-77-147) for the tournament.

Sharing the bronze medal were London’s Jay Chambers and Aurora’s Peter Willis at four-over for the tournament. Chambers was even (72) on the second round after a four-over (76) opening round. As for Willis, the 2014 Ontario Public Player Champion, he held the lead after round one at three-under (69). However, he finished round two seven-over (79) to settle for a share of third.

The B Flight was won by Walkerton’s Blake Mackey, who followed up his opening round of net four-under (68) with a second straight round of four-under (68) to complete the tournament at eight-under (68-68-136). Silver went to Oakville’s Manojav Sridhar with a tournament total of net five-under (71-68-139).  Oshawa’s Mark Westfall claimed the bronze at one-under (70-73-143).

In the C Flight, Shedden’s Paul Young began the final round with a one-shot lead after carding a net two-under (70) during the first day. He would see that lead through to the end of the competition, finishing round two with a net six-under (66) to win the title at eight-under (70-66-136). Picking up the silver, in the division, was Toronto’s John Baty who finished with a two-day net total of four-under (73-67-140). Sarnia’s Nick Powell earned the bronze at net three-under (73-68-141).
