The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks have taken the first game of its WOAA Senior hockey league playoff series with the Durham Thundercats.
Led by a three-goal performance by Trent Hawke, the Hawks downed the Thundercats, 5-3 to lead the best of seven league quarter final series, 1-0.
Durham's downfall was penalties.
Three of the Hawks goals came on power plays.
Hawks coach Peter Roedger says it was a classic playoff game.
He says it was a tight contest and fast-paced throughout but he liked the little things the players were doing, along with their discipline.
Roedger says that first game is always a critical one, with the next two being in Durham before returning to home ice on Saturday, February 13th.
The Player of the game was Brent MacDermid of the Hawks who had a goal and three helpers.
He calls it a big win for the team and if they can steal a game in Durham, it could put them in the driver's seat for the series.
The next game in the series goes Saturday in Durham at 7 PM.
Third game goes next Friday, February 12th also in Durham before the series switches back to Saugeen Shores on Saturday, February 13th.
That February 13th game will go at 7:30 PM at the Plex.
