SIU Clears Orillia OPP Officer

Orillia | by Jim Birchard

Probe clears Russell Watson in arrest of a woman in Orillia in 2013.

The Special Investigations Unit has cleared an O-P-P officer in connection with injuries suffered by a woman during an arrest in Orillia in 2013.

S-I-U director Tony Loparco says an investigation determined that O-P-P Sergeant Russell Watson did not use excessive force while arresting Maria Farrell, and that the arrest was lawful.

The S-I-U had previously cleared Watson but reopened the case after a judge criticized the officer in the case against Farrell, who was acquitted of obstruction and assaulting a police officer.

Farrell sustained injuries including a fractured left tibia as she struggled with Watson during the arrest.
