Push for French Immersion

Goderich | by Fadi Didi

Avon-Maitland District School Board currently offers program only in Stratford

A group of parents wants to bring public French Immersion to Huron County.

Goderich parent Sydney Elder began the Facebook group "Huron County Parents for French Immersion" after investigating where elementary French Immersion was available locally.

Currently, the Avon-Maitland District School Board offers immersion classes at two elementary schools and one secondary school.

All three are in Stratford.

In February, Elder attended a board meeting with the AMDSB, where members decided it would not be worth surveying parents on the need for French Immersion after doing so previously in 2006.

That survey revealed only one parent interested in a French curriculum.

Elder says she also approached administration at Goderich Public School to get an understanding of the demand.

She was told there was little.

Now, the Facebook group has over eighty local members brainstorming ways to kickstart a French Immersion program in Goderich.

Elder says she knows forty parents who would endorse a French Immersion program in Goderich, a far cry from the one response received from the AMDSB in 2006.

At the same board meeting where a more current survey was dismissed, Elder tells us the magic number of interested parents needed for the AMDSB to consider a French Immersion class is twenty-one.

Elder is asking anyone interested in enrolling their children in elementary French Immersion to be in touch with "Huron County Parents for French Immersion" on Facebook, or with the Avon-Maitland District School Board.

The AMDSB can be reached at 1-800-592-5437.
