Goderich Approves Crossing Guards

Goderich | by Rick Stow

Council gives thumbs up to two crossing guards around Goderich Public School.

Two new crossing guards will be good to go in two weeks time for the intersections of Eldon and Blake, and Eldon and Bennett Streets in Goderich.

Chief Administrative Officer Larry McCabe says in fact, three persons have been hired as guards and are undergoing training and police checks.

Additional crossing guards were the subject of a recent internet petition that stressed possible close calls between children and vehicles around Goderich Public School.

The area has additional school bus traffic following closure of adjacent rural schools.

Safety is also the reason why Council suspended the relocation of the crossing guard stationed at a the intersection of Highway 8 and Britannia Road.

Representatives want to look at a signaled crosswalk for the juncture.

Members adopted Councillor Judy Crawford's suggestion that administration cost out the walkway with overhead flashing lights and report back.

In the interim, the guard will remain so that the crossing is not left unattended.
