Eighteen rookies advanced to the Owen Sound Attack's main training camp.
After a two day rookie camp Monday and Tuesday, the 18 newcomers will now compete with the returning Attack players for spots on the Ontario Hockey League club.
Attack General Manager Dale DeGray stresses the 18 rookies have earned their opportunity to advance.
The number of newcomers moving on represents the most in DeGray's tenure as General Manager with the Attack and he's quick to state the high number of rookies does not in any way indicate excessive vacancies regarding the returning players.
Some of the rookies advancing are expected to make the club this year.
That group includes first rounder Ethan Szypula and third round pick Ryan Heeps.
Szypula has been signed to an OHL contract.
Heeps is unsigned at the moment, simply because his parents weren't in Owen Sound on Tuesday when the offer was presented.
DeGray fully expects Heeps to be signed, maybe as early as tomorrow
Several other rookies advancing to the main camp showed well against their fellow rookies but will now be gauged for their ability when competing against OHL veterans.
The squad is scheduled to be on the ice at 1:30 PM and 3 PM on Wednesday after fitness testing earlier.
The first pre-season game for the Attack is Sunday when they host the Barrie Colts at 2 PM at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore Community Centre.
