Region 4 Off To Summer Games

Owen Sound | by Fred Wallace

Almost 50 athletes will compete at Summer Games in York Region this weekend.

The Ontario Special Olympic Summer Games are being hosted in York Region this week.

Our area will be represented by almost 50 athletes and more than a dozen coaches competing in a variety of events Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Among the entries from Region 4 will be a soccer team from Owen Sound, a softball team based out of Hanover and a variety of athletes competing in gymnastics and in Track & Field.

Region 4 Coach Dianne Speed admits the process of qualifying and preparing for the Summer Games is exciting.

Speed says by the time the Region 4 team departs on Thursday at 7 AM, the athletes will be at a sky high level emotionally.

The excitement is heightened by the treatment the athletes receive at their lodging and through activities like the " lighting of the torch " which mirrors the Olympic act.

Speed says Owen Sound's Soccer team is looking good and are ranked as a " C " team.

Plus, based on their preparation, Speed anticipates great results in track and field, especially in the high jump.
