The defending Western Junior C Hockey League champion Walkerton Hawks have received an early wake-up call in their best-of-seven semi-final series against Mount Forest.
The 556 fans at Walkerton Arena went home in shock last night (FRI) as the Patriots overcame a very early Walkerton goal by Adam Alexander and went on to defeat the Hawks 5-2 in the series opener.
Alexander put Walkerton in front 1-0 within the first two minutes of the game.
Cody Wright and Doug Costanzo struck for Mount Forest in the second period with the first of two goals for each player, then Haden Campbell scored for Walkerton early in the third to tie the score 2-2.
The Patriots then scored three goals in the last 2:34 of the final period -- including one from Matt Marshall -- to put the game away.
Mount Forest goaltender Luke Bierworth came away with the victory, stopping 27 of 29 shots -- Walkerton's Jeff Flagler made 33 saves on 37 shots as Wright fired a goal into the empty net.
The Patriots host the Hawks in game two of the series at the Mount Forest Recreation Centre tonight at 8pm.
Also tonight the Mitchell Hawks will try to draw even in their best-of-seven semi-final against the Kincardine Bulldogs.
Mitchell trails one game to none with tonight's game facing off at the Mitchell and District Arena at 7:15pm
