The Goderich Sailors scored three goals in a bid to come from behind in the third period but it wasn't enough as they dropped a 5-4 decision in a shootout to Lucan in Junior C Interlock division hockey.
Tom Bedour scored twice with one assist for Goderich at MRC last night (SAT) while Joseph Dykstra scored the Sailors' other two goals.
Defenceman Mack O'Keefe had two assists and Ben Gowing set up Dykstra's second goal.
Lucan was led by Dylan Moss with two goals -- Mitch Smith and Mike Hisey rounded out the scoring for the Irish.
Sailors' head coach Brad Burton admits it was frustrating to give up a short-handed goal less than two and-a-half minutes after Bedour opened the scoring on the power-play in the first period.
He prefers to concentrate on the positive -- which includes the third-period comeback in which Goderich outscored Lucan 3-1 in the final period of regulation play.
Burton says the Sailors have to stay out of the penalty-box -- they were assessed 40 minutes in penalties including two 10-minute misconducts compared to just five minors for Lucan.
He admits he's not surprised at Lucan's level of play because they draw from a large pool of available players in the London minor hockey system.
The Irish were in the former Southern Ontario Junior D League which is in the process of merging with Junior C leagues.
The two levels will be fully integrated in the 2013-14 season.
The Sailors travel to Wingham Friday night, then to Lucan on October 17th before returning home to face Walkerton on October 20th.
Last night's other Western Junior C play saw Mitchell double Hanover 4-2 while Kincardine exploded for seven goals in the third period to stun Mount Forest 9-8.
