Western Junior C Playoffs

Walkerton, Wingham and Hanover all win Friday night in Western Junior C playoffs.


The Walkerton Hawks have grabbed a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven Western Junior C Hockey League quarter-final series with a 5-0 victory over the Goderich Sailors.

Andy Mitchell opened the scoring for Walkerton just 36 seconds into the first period on Friday night at MRC.

He scored the last goal of the second period to make it 4-0 Hawks through 40 minutes.

Haden Campbell and Adam Alexander also scored in the middle frame and Dylan Bults added a goal early in the third.

Mitchell added an assist with other helpers from Eric Lekun, Tanner Mighton, Ryan Stroz and Jordan Turcotte.

Jeff Flagler stopped 33 Goderich shots in posting the shutout.

The Sailors and Hawks meet in Walkerton for game two at the Walkerton Arena on Saturday night at 6:30 PM.

In Friday's other Western Junior C post-season action:

Wade Stevenson scored both goals in the third period as Wingham defeated Kincardine 4-3 in the opener of their best-of-seven.

And Rob Lucciantonio scored a goal and added two assists to lead Hanover over Mount Forest 5-1 -- the Barons lead that series 2-0.
