Winterhawks Edge Crushers

Port Elgin | by John Divinski

Winterhawks down Shallow Lake 5-4 to win second game of WOAA season.

The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks have picked up their second win of the "AA" senior hockey season against no losses.

The Hawks beat the visiting Shallow Lake Crushers, 5-4 in a chippy game Friday night, where power-play and short-handed goals played a big part.

The Winterhawks managed to pick up two short-handed goals from player of the game Brent McDermid and Darryl MacKinnon.

But the winning goal was scored with just under 90 seconds to go as Brendon Haefling (HAY-fling) took a pass from Nick Quaid and Bryan Kazarian.

Hawks coach Jim Grieve says his bench was short last night and at times, the players lost focus on the game plan, resulting in penalties.

Meanwhile, Shallow Lake Crushers coach D. J. Selkirk says he obviously would have liked to have seen a different outcome but he says his players gave it their all but came up short.

The Winterhawks next game is next Friday, October 21st, as the Lucknow Lancers visit.

Game time at the Plex at 8:30 PM.

Aso last night -- the Durham Thundercats beat the Walkerton Capitals 5-3.

It was the home opener for the Thundercats.
