In N-H-L pre-season action, Joe Colbourne scored the winner and Matt Frattin had two of his own as the Maple Leafs beat the Flyers 4-2. Big-ticket free agent netminder Ilya Bryzgalov made his first start for Philadelphia, allowing three goals on 24 shots.
Elsewhere, Montreal lost 3-1 to Buffalo and Ottawa beat Boston in overtime 2-1.
Mike Modano is hanging up his skates after 21 seasons in the N-H-L. Modano announced his retirement Wednesday with a posting on his Facebook page saying what a great ride it’s been. The 41-year-old debuted in 1989 with the Minnesota North Stars who later became the Dallas Stars.
At the J-D MacArthur Arena, the Owen Sound Attack began defending their O-H-L championship title on a winning note with a 6-2 win over Plymouth. Brendan Childerley led the way with a pair of goals. This Saturday, the Attack will unveil the 2011 MidWest Division Champion Banner and the 2011 Wayne Gretzky Western Conference Champion Banner when they host the Saginaw Spirit.
Tonight, the Barrie Colts open their regular season at the B-M-C playing host to Kingston. Puck drops at 7:30.
At the Rogers Centre, it wasn’t a great night for the Toronto Blue Jays. Vernon Wells went deep against his former team again as the L-A Angels thumped Toronto 7-2. The Jays play their last game at home tonight wrapping up their 4-game series with L-A.
Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie broke his right middle finger while fielding grounders during batting practice. He’s out for the rest of the season.
Canadian speedskater Kristina Groves is calling it a career. The Ottawa native claimed four Olympic and 18 world championship medals, including a silver and bronze at the 2010 Vancouver Games. The 34-year-old suffered a concussion in a crash last November which sidelined her for the rest of the season.
