In Major League Baseball, the Toronto Blue Jays couldn’t sweep the Cincinnati Reds in Inter-League play. Carlos Villenueva was dinged for a 2-run homer by Miguel Cairo in a 2-1 loss for the Jays, giving the Reds their first victory over an American League team this season. Next up for the Jays is a 3-game stint in Atlanta against the Braves.
In minor-league baseball, the Barrie Baycats fell out of first place after being swept by the London Majors in a double-header. The Baycats lost their first game 9-1, and held out for 8 extra innings in the second game before falling 4-3 in 15 innings yesterday. Barrie's next game will be a rematch with the London Majors on Tuesday night in Guelph.
Rory McIlroy stepped into stardom at the U-S Open. The 22-year-old from Northern Ireland shattered the tournament's scoring record by four strokes to win his first major. The win makes him the youngest U-S Open winner since 21-year-old Bobby Jones won in 1923.
Canada suffered its 13th defeat at the FIFA under-17 World Cup tournament after a 3-nothing loss to Uruguay in the opener for both teams. Canada’s next game will be Wednesday when they’ll try for a win against England.
Dario Franchitti kept his cool and it paid off at the Milwaukee Mile. Franchitti won his third IndyCar race of the year after Tony Kanaan crashed and Helio Castroneves was forced to make a pit stop with a tire problem. Toronto rookie James Hinchcliffe finished in 6th.
