Scores and Games

The Boston Bruins are the Stanley Cup champs after skunking the Vancouver Canucks last night 4-0. Tim Thomas had 37 saves in his second shutout of the finals while Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand scored two goals each, securing the Bruins' first championship since 1972.

Canucks fans are likely pointing their fingers at goalie Roberto Luongo, who gave up 18 goals in the final five games of the series. After the game, disappointed Canucks fans left Rogers Arena to images of trouble-makers rioting in the streets of Vancouver, setting fires and flipping over cars.

In Major League Baseball, the battle of the birds continued at Rogers Centre last night with the Jays coming out 4-1 winners over the Baltimore Orioles. Ricky Romero threw 12 strikeouts over 8 innings while Adam Lind, Yunel Escobar and Juan Rivera all homered for Toronto.

Right-hander Zach Stewart who was called up from Double-A New Hampshire on Tuesday makes his big league debut for the Jays this afternoon.

In minor-league baseball, the Barrie Baycats are on the road tonight visiting the Brantford Red Sox. The Baycats lost a close one to Brantford at home last weekend 8-7.

The C-F-L preseason opened yesterday as the B-C Lions roared over Calgary 24-to-nothing. Travis Lulay completed eight-of-13 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown, and B-C backups Jarious Jackson and Mike Reilly also threw touchdown passes.
