Winterhawks Win Opener

Saugeen Shores | by John Divinski

Saugeen Shores beats Monkton 5-3 to win Game 1 of WOAA Hockey Championship.

The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks have taken the first game of the WOAA Sr. League Championship.

Friday night before a packed Plex -- the Hawks scored a 5-3 win over the Monkton Wildcats in the first game of the Best of seven series.

Shawn Walker picked up right where he left off last week, scoring a goal and earning two assists all in the first period.

Winger Brent MacDermid scored what turned out to be the winning goal.

He says both teams have never played each other so it was a learning experience.

MacDermid says he didn't notice the same team speed from Monkton, which is a South Division team,  as from teams in the North Division.

The next game in the series goes tonight in Listowel.

Monkton will play their home games at the Listowel Arena because their regular home ice has been taken out for the season.
