Funeral for Chief Akiwenzie

Hundreds of people attend funeral for Chippewas of Nawash Chief Ralph Akiwenzie.

A well attended funeral service for the leader of the Chippewas of Nawash Ralph Akiwenzie.

Nearly 100 people attended the service at St Mary's Church at Cape Croker on Tuesday while over 300 more people packed into the Community Hall to watch the service on a video link.

It was equal parts tears and laughter as those in attendance celebrated his life.

Numerous local and regional dignitaries attended the service - including representatives from the Town of Saugeen Shores, Saugeen First Nation, City of Owen Sound, and from throughout Ontario and even Quebec.

Representatives from Bruce Power were also in attendance.

Following the service, a nearly 40 car funeral procession departed St Mary's Church as hundreds of mourners lined the street on both sides to say their final goodbyes to Chief Akiwenzie.

Throughout the service, Akiwenzie was described as a strong leader and a supportive and attentive man - respected and loved by many.

Akiwenzie passed away last Friday following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

He would have turned 65 on Thursday.
