Municipal Councils Can Now Meet Online

Regional | by Robyn Garvey

Councils that have cancelled meetings due to COVID-19 can now work remotely.

The Province has passed emergency legislation that will now allow municipal councils to hold electronic meetings during the COVID-19 situation.

Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Walker says the amendment to the Municipal was necessary in order to enable municipal councils to do their job without the need to meet face to face.

The move to allow virtual meetings says Walker is something many municipalities in his riding have  requested in response to COVID-19 and the need for self isolation.

Hanover Mayor Sue Paterson is very pleased saying the new legislation empowers municipalities to respond quickly and continue to function during these unprecedented times.

Prior to the amendment the Municipal Act prohibited Councils from holding electronic meetings and required Councillors to physically meet face to face.

By allowing the virtual meetings, Walker says municipalities will be able to carry on with business while still adhering to the social distancing protocols.

The emergency legislation was passed with unanimous consent by 26 MPPs, the members participating was kept small deliberately in order to practice social distancing.
