Former Owen Sound Councillor Passes

Owen Sound | by Bayshore News Staff

Community mourns loss of Peter Lemon.

(Peter Lemon has died at 76)

A former Owen Sound city councillor who spent parts of four decades giving back to his community through public service passed away Friday.

Peter Lemon died at the Owen Sound hospital due to complications from a foot infection. He was 76.

Lemon was in declining health in recent years and spent many days in hospital.

He is remembered as a community champion in Owen Sound who advocated fiercely for the less fortunate. Lemon introduced a plan that led to the creation of the Owen Sound Municipal Non-Profit Housing Corporation in 1986 after having first been elected to council in 1985.

After an election defeat, followed by a shortened term interrupted by a break from local politics to attend university, Lemon was appointed to council in 1996 and retained his seat for more than 22 years until being defeated in the 2018 municipal vote.

In recent years, he was often vocal at the council table ensuring accessibility concerns were addressed in city planning.

Many offered kind words or took to social media Friday to pay respects to Lemon, his former council colleagues among them.

Owen Sound Mayor Ian Boddy said: “We were all very saddened with the news about Peter. All of the last council absolutely loved the guy. He was progressive. He was always looking ahead to his next project for Owen Sound, right up to the end. He rarely took time to think about his accomplishments and there are many. We will all miss Peter.”

Coun. Richard Thomas wrote: "Peter loved Owen Sound, and devoted his life to our community. Non-profit housing, transit, accessibility, culture and heritage all owe a huge debt of gratitude to this man. We all owe a huge debt of gratitude to Peter."

Former Mayor Stew Taylor said: "Peter was one of my favourite councillors. He was truly a son of Owen Sound and worked tirelessly."

A visitation for Lemon will be held at the Brian E. Wood Funeral Home in Owen Sound on Feb. 3 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

There will be a funeral service held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at St. George's Anglican Church.
