Another Day of Job Action Impacts Bluewater Students

Regional | by Cody Misner

Students under the Bluewater District School Board won't be attending school Wednesday, January 15th

Students under the Bluewater District School Board won't be attending school Wednesday, January 15th as Ontario Secondary School Teacher's Federation Members hold a fifth day of job action.

In a press release, Bluewater has said that the decision to close both Secondary and Elementary Schools is a lack of staff won't allow for them to ensure student safety and well being.

They have stated that if the board and the OSSTF reach an agreement before Wednesday than the school will remain open.

The Elementary School Teachers Federation of Ontario have also announced that as of Monday, January 13th all members will no longer participate in field trips, assemblies or extracurricular activities.

They have also said that ETFO members will not arrive to work earlier than 30 minutes before or leave work more than 15 minutes after.

Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education issued a statement in response to the job action criticizing Federation leaderships commitment to keeping students in class.

Lecce says the interests of the Federation range from higher wages to enhanced entitlements.

In the past, the OSSTF has stated that compensation is not the primary concern but issues like larger class sizes and mandatory online classes are the driving factors.

This series of job actions have been happening since December 2019.
