Akil Thomas broke a 3-3 tie with 3:58 remaining in regulation, as Canada rallied from 3-1 down in the third period to beat Russia 4-3 to capture gold at the World Junior Hockey Championship in Czech Republic yesterday.

It marked the 18th time Canada prevailed at the World Juniors, and just the first time since 2008 that they brought home gold at an overseas tournament, having failed to hit the podium in the last three events played in Europe.

Top-rated NHL draft prospect Alexis Lafreniere was named World Juniors MVP -- after scoring four goals and putting up 10 points in five games.

Owen Sound Attack captain Aidan Dudas finished the tournament with two assists -- and was a key part of Canada's penalty killing unit.
