The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks at a piece of top spot in the WOAA Senior Hockey League, before Christmas, went by the wayside with a heartbreaking loss to league-leading Ripley Wolves.
It was pretty well a closely-fought game throughout but the Wolves came out on top with a 3-2 win, scoring the winning goal with just over a minute left to play in the 3rd period.
Hawks coach Matt Turcotte says generally he was happy with the game but there were lapses that Ripley took advantage of.
Turcotte says the Wolves had the edge in play in the second period, and then his squad got into penalty trouble and it was hard to get going again after that.
The win puts Ripley up four points on the Hawks for first place.
Scoring for the Hawks were Bryan Kazarian and Miles MacLean.
Scoring for Ripley were Garrett Meurs, Cody Britton and Adam Alexander.
The Hawks are off until Friday, December 27th when they travel to Shallow Lake to play the Crushers.
The next home game is Saturday, December 28th when the Hawks host the Elora Rocks.
Gametime at the Plex will be 7pm and the Hawks will be wearing black and gold jerseys, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 1979-80 Port Elgin Bears who won the Central Jr. C Championship.
Many alumni will be in attendance and the Winterhawks commemorative jerseys will be auctioned off, both in a live and silent auction.
Some of the proceeds will be donated to charity.
