The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks defeated the Durham Thundercats, 4-3 in a shootout in WOAA Senior Hockey.
It was the home-opener for the Hawks at the Plex on Friday night.
The game didn't belong to the Hawks until Brent MacDermid, the final shooter in the first round of the shootout, scored to notch the win.
Hawks coach Matt Turcotte described the game as "literally gone" but they reached down and tied it at three with 6-seconds left in the game.
Nothing was decided in the 5-minute overtime period and then came the shootout for the win.
Durham led most of the way until the Hawks picked it up in the 3rd period.
Turcotte was tossed from the game during the overtime period after Blake Underwood got a goaltender interference minor at the 3:01 mark.
When asked about it, Turcotte said Underwood went to the opposing net with two hands on his stick and with the puck, "I don't know how he gets an interference penalty trying to score a goal. He (the referee) must have saw it differently and I apologize for my outburst."
The Winterhawks are on the ice again on Saturday, when the play the Lucknow Lancers in Lucknow.
Gametime there is 7:30pm.
The next home game for the Hawks is Friday, October 25th when they host the Petrolia Squires at the Plex.
