By-Law Passes to Change Retail Holiday Restrictions in Owen Sound

Owen Sound | by Matt Hermiz

Stores can now open on four public holidays.

You could see more stores open in Owen Sound on Labour Day next month.

Council has officially passed a by-law to exempt businesses in the city from the Retail Business Holidays Act and allow them to operate on four statutory holidays.

Retail businesses in Owen Sound can now choose to open on Labour Day, Family Day, Victoria Day and Canada Day.

The by-law passed continues to prohibit retailers from opening on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

The new rules were a recommendation from the Economic Development and Tourism Advisory Committee. It is being done on a trial basis with the city able to amend the by-law to add or remove days should it choose.
