Saugeen Shores Designated as a Bicycle Friendly Community

Saugeen Shores becomes the first community in Bruce County to receive the honour

The Town of Saugeen Shores received the bronze award at the Ontario Bike Summit in Toronto on Monday (April 1).

This means Saugeen Shores and its 40 km of trials and road connections is now officially a Bicycle Friendly Community through the Share the Road designation program, becoming the first community in Bruce County to receive the honour.
  
Recreation Supervisor for the Town of Saugeen Shores, Lisa Billing says a lot of their efforts last year went into infrastructure, education and programming, which will continue to roll in 2019. 

"In terms out on the road they will notice signage that marks our Great Lakes Waterfront Trial. We're working on a trail extension that goes around the Port Elgin Harbour, which connects the harbour to the North Shore Park Trail... to increase safety".

Billings says three trail counters were installed to collect data which helped Saugeen Shores achieve its Bicycle Friendly Community status.

Saugeen Shores will continue to promote cycling in Saugeen Shores during the month of June which is known has Bike Month in Ontario through events including: bike to work day, the bike to school challenge and the Bicycle Rodeo.

Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneu accepted the award during the Toronto event and praised Town employees and volunteers for their effort in making Saugeen Shores a bike friendly community. 

In 2017, Saugeen Shores embarked on a journey to become more bike friendly, which included the launch of the Bruce County-Southwest Ontario by Bike Network, development of a bicycle-friendly community work plan, new bike racks and repair stations, community events and the extension of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail through Saugeen Shores. At that time, Saugeen Shores received on honourable mention from the Bicycle Friendly Community program.
