Winterhawks Squeak Out Win Over Thundercats

Port Elgin | by John Divinski

Saugeen Shores needed a shootout after Durham climbed back from a 3-goal third period deficit.

It took a shootout to do it, but the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks edged the Durham Thundercat 6-5 in WOAA Sr Hockey.

The Hawks seemed to have the game at the Plex well in hand going into the 3rd period, with a 4-1 lead, but the Thundercats came back with 3 goals in just over 2 minutes to tie it at 4.

Each team scored once each after that and nothing was decided in overtime so they went to a shootout and that's where the Hawks put it away.

Hawks coach Matt Turcotte, says the Durham squad is a good team and he salutes them for coming back from a 3-goal deficit.

However, Turcotte was glad for the 2-points after it was all over.

In regulation time, Jay Thomson led the way with a pair of goals for the Hawks, while singles went to Adam Little, Curtis Johnston and James McHaig.

Bill Terpstra notched two goals for the Thundercats while singles went to Randy Cox, Chris Brown, and Kyler Nixon.

Next up for the Winterhawks is an afternoon game at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine on Saturday, December 22nd.

The Ripley Wolves will be the home team for the game and the Hawks are thinking payback for the 7-3 loss they took from the Wolves on October 6th.

Gametime at the Davidson Centre is 5pm.

A Jr. C game featuring the Kincardine Bulldogs will follow the senior game.

Elsewhere on Friday night, the Ripley Wolves hammered the Lucknow Lancers, 10-3.

The Shelburne Muskies beat the Shallow Lake Crushers, 9-4.
