Bruce Power Transformer Failure on Unit 8

Bruce Power | by Travis Jackson

Transformer failure leads to fire, oil leak. Active monitoring to make sure no pollution reached Lake Huron.

Failure of a transformer outside the Unit 8 building at the Bruce B generating station last evening caused a fire, which resulted in a release of mineral oil.

Bruce Power Director of Corporate Communications, John Peevers, says that there's a containment system around the transformer that is designed to contain the leak.

The collection system captured the majority of oil.

Peevers says Bruce Power is proud of the way their firefighters responded to the blaze. He says there was one injury.

One firefighter was treated for heat stress and is resting at home.

Peevers says there is no need for public concern. Brue Power staff are monitoring to make sure no oil has contaminated Lake Huron, and right now there is no indication of any pollution whatsoever.

He says that things should begin returning to normal today.

Unit 8 was offline for planned maintenance at the time of the incident.

According to a press release issued this morning, notifications have been made to the appropriate agencies.
