Willms Wins It for Colts in Overtime

Colts forward with 2 goals and 3 points as Barrie takes a 1-0 series lead.


The Barrie Colts open their OHL Eastern Conference Semifinal series with a win.
 
Jason Willms (2 goals, 1 assist) scored his second goal of the game just 2 minutes into overtime to give the Colts a 6-5 victory over the Kingston Frontenacs on Wednesday night.
 
Willms tried to make a pass out in front but the puck instead hit the back of Jeremy Helvig’s (39 saves) left pad and in.
 
Both teams exchanging goals in the first period. First, it was Linus Lyman for the Frontenacs followed by Jaden Peca for the Colts.
 
Then Justin Pringle put Kingston ahead again only to have Dmitry Sokolov (1 goal, 1 assist) tie it again for Barrie at 2-2 after one.
 
Matt Hotchkiss put the Frontenacs up 3-2 in the second period but the Colts got goals by Aaron Luchuk (1 goal, 1 assist) and Ryan Suzuki (1 goal, 1 assist) and it was 4-3 for the Colts after two periods.
 
With Barrie up 5-4 midway through the third, Jason Robertson (1 goal, 2 assists) snuck one in past Leo Lararev (23 saves) to tie the game up at 5-5. 
 
Jakob Brahaney had the other Frontenacs goal while Cliff Pu collected 3 assists.
 
Power plays saw Barrie go 1-for-2, Kingston scored on both of their opportunities.
 
The Colts have a 1-0 series lead and will be home for Game 2 of the best-of-seven on Friday night.
