Tough Decision For Rengel Jury

I wouldn't have wanted to be in their shoes, but I think the jury in the trial of a 17 year old girl who coerced her boyfriend into allegedly killing 14 year old Stefanie Rengel made the right decision.

On the third day of deliberations, the jury found the girl, known only as MT because she's under age, guilty of first degree murder.

Now prosecutors will ask for an adult sentence for the jealous teenage girl who used sexual blackmail to persuade her boyfriend who is alleged to have stabbed Rengel to death in front of  her parents' Toronto home on New Year's day 2008.

For an adult, first degree murder carries a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.

But for a young offender, the sentence is life with at least five years behind bars before any chance of parole.

Evidence presented at the trial showed MT sent a number of text and MSN messages to her boyfriend saying things like: No sex until you kill her.

I just can't get my head around how a young girl, she was 15 when this all happened, could even think about seriously wanting someone dead.

I can't imagine having that much anger and being that jealous and then acting on it.

I know things have changed a lot since I was a teenager, and sure I was a bit rebellious at that age like many teens, but never would I have ever thought of acting the way MT did.

I have to admit I feel sorry for her because if she does get sentenced as an adult, she'll be spending the best years of her life behind bars.

But I feel even more for Rengel's family who lost a daughter to such a senseless act.

From Where I Sit, I'm Catherine Thompson.
