Collingwood has its first ever female mayor.
Sandra Cooper has won be a landslide.
Cooper had 57 hundred votes with second place newcomer Mike Young with 14 hundred and 47 votes.
Kathy Jeffery, a councillor for two terms, was considered one of the front runners along with Sandra Cooper, but Jeffery only had 964 votes.
Cooper has 13 years of council experience, seven as deputy mayor. In the 2006 election, Cooper had 32 hundred and 54 votes for Deputy Mayor, but it was a closer race.
Rick Lloyd is the new Deputy Mayor. He beat councillor Norman Sandberg by just over 35 hundred votes.
Lloyd has been away from the council table for the last four years, but says he’s looking forward to being back and to working with Mayor Cooper and the rest of the new council.
Lloyd has 16 years of experience as a councillor, first elected in 1985.
Only two of the incumbent councillors have been re-elected. They are Ian Chadwick and Mike Edwards. Five incumbents were running again and there was a record 21 candidates in total.
The five other councillors are retired businessman Kevin Lloyd (no relation to Rick Lloyd), Keith Hull, journalist Dale West, former Fire Chief Sandy Cunningham, and former councillor Joe Gardhouse who lost to Sandra Cooper in the race for Deputy Mayor in 2006.
The new public school board trustee is Caroline Smith and Shawn Cooper, Mayor Cooper’s son, is the new catholic school board rep.
Sandra Cooper says it’s evident the people of Collingwood wanted change.
Voter turn out was up this time around, 86 hundred and 57 of the just over 17 thousand eligible voters cast a ballot. That’s 50.87 percent, up from about 39 percent in 2006.
The town clerk, Sara Almas, says these are unofficial results and the town has until Wednesday for the results to be certified.
