No charges will be laid against an officer at the Burks Falls OPP Detachment in connection to a 54 year old man’s death.
On March 15th 2019, a man passed away at Huntsville District Memorial Hospital, 11 days after being admitted for a cocaine overdose.
The overdose happened while the man was incarcerated at the Detachment after he ate cocaine he had concealed in his body.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) invoked their mandate after learning of the case.
Now the SIU’s Director Joseph Martino has ruled that while it’s regrettable the man was able to take cocaine into the cell with him, the subject officer did what he could to detect any contraband prior to having him lodged.
Martino says there is no indication of a want of care on the part of the officer that approaches the threshold for criminality.
No charges will be laid.
