Saugeen Shores council is approving $280,000 in funding to support the contract work for the reconstruction of Snyder Street and Saugeen Beach Road.
During a council meeting on June 13, a report was brought forward by Acting Director of Development Services Colin Saunders.
The report recommended using the unallocated OCIF funding to support the contract awarded to Harold Sutherland Construction Limited.
The report says the Snyder Street project aims to address major settlement which has occurred in the roadway, about 400 meters from George Street to Jay Street, as well as the small dead-end east of Jay Street.
The Saugeen Beach Road portion seeks to reinstall asphalt and road-base, as well as the instalment of curbs and armour stone protection to avoid further damage to the road from the lake. The contract also includes tree replanting on Bruce Road 25 as well as install two small infiltration trenches to help reduce some of the storm water runoff which flows to the beach.
The costs for the reconstruction projects were included in the 2022 capital budget at $760,250, with the tree plantings to be partially covered through the previous 2020 capital budget.
The contract cost for the project is $926,726, however, and it is proposed to use the $280,000 in OCIF funding received this year, which has not been allocated towards any specific project, to cover the remainder of the costs.
Saunders says they have put the two projects together as they are close in proximity and could save a bit of money by doing them together.
Saunders adds they will be starting the projects after Labour Day.
“Snyder Road has been on our docket for a long time and one that we are glad to be getting done before the end of the term,” says Mayor Luke Charbonneau. “Saugeen Beach Road, to be able to turn it around so quickly after the damage was done to that road, come up with a project and repair that road, it’s a busy road, is a really important project.”
