The Town of South Bruce Peninsula is going to consider entering into a site plan agreement with Lakeshore Inn at Sauble Beach Inc. at a future council meeting.
During a council meeting on April 19, a report was brought forward recommending adding the needed by-law to the agenda of a future council meeting.
The report says this follows the adoption of a zoning by-law in December 2021, which amended the zoning provisions of municipally owned lands on 119 Lakeshore Boulevard North and 122 Second Avenue North. The amendment adjusted the zoning designation on Second Avenue North to a special commercial zone to allow for the development of a motel.
The proposed development seeks to build a 21 suite four-storey motel, featuring an advanced waste management system. It would also feature a small on-site interior kitchen and guest eating area.
The report says staff have been working with the developer over the past few months to solidify the site plan agreement. Staff have become satisfied with the drawings and reports sent in, and presented the agreement to council.
This follows after the town had previously deferred a rezoning application for the proposed development, when Mayor Janice Jackson had read letters from residents who did not wish to see the lakeshore be turned into a “Miami Beach” full of hotels.
Jackson says the development will be the first of its kind in the area.
“We have two-storey motels and this will be a four-storey hotel. We haven’t had anything like that in Sauble to this date. It will be a small boutique hotel and I think it will offer a different experience to Sauble Beach goers,” says Jackson.
Jackson adds she feels this will be a needed accommodation to welcome tourists to the area.
“Our tourism is growing all the time and we simply don’t have enough accommodation to go around, which is why even our cottage rental business is very a important component to our tourism,” says Jackson.
Should council choose to approve the by-law at a future meeting, there would be no further requirements on their end.
Jackson says the by-law will return for their next council meeting on May 3.
