Both Grey and Bruce Counties are conducting a one-day survey to create a snapshot of homelessness in the area.
The Counties say on Monday, October 18, they will be working with community partners to conduct anonymous surveys for individuals experiencing homelessness.
This is part of an Ontario Ministry of Housing mandate, meaning the Province requires all municipal housing and homelessness service providers to conduct this survey.
Staff and volunteers will be available at various hub sites to meet with individuals.
A release says the information provided will help the County better understand the current scope of homelessness in the area and data will be used to inform future decisions around needed supports and services.
A Bruce County release states, “Everyone counts. Bruce County wants to hear from those who are sleeping on the street, couch surfing, or temporarily housed.”
It adds, “The anonymous comments and information collected can help improve housing and homelessness services in Bruce County.”
County Warden Janice Jackson says in a statement, “Bruce County is committed to planning, delivering, and advocating for responsive services that help individuals and families enhance their level of participation and quality of life in our communities. Bruce County strives to provide accessible services that remove barriers and create opportunities.”
In Bruce County on October 18, surveys will be available at Penetangore Hub (Kincardine), Lakeshore Hub (Port Elgin), Peninsula Hub (Wiarton), Salvation Army (Wiarton), The Meeting Place (Tobermory), and the Bruce County Administration Centre (Walkerton). Call 1-800-265-3022 to help identify your closest hub.
In Grey County, the survey can also be completed by phone by calling 519-376-5744. Hub sites include: Grey County Administration Building (595 9th Ave East, Owen Sound), Safe N’ Sound (310 8th St E, Owen Sound), OSHaRE (946 3rd Ave East, Owen Sound), the Erskine Centre (90 Artemesia Street South, Dundalk), South East Grey Community Health Centre (55 Victoria Avenue, Markdale), Beaver Valley Outreach (54 King Street East, Thornbury), Durham Ontario Works Satellite Office (575 Saddler Street East, Durham, Hanover Ontario Works Satellite Office (268 10th Street, Hanover).
Grey County says participants will receive a gift card as thanks for supporting the survey. Volunteers will also be available at hub sites to inform those in need of available supports in the region.
