Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
It's going to happen in Owen Sound, it's going happen to Owen Sound, so Attack fans should brace themselves for the reality that's just around the corner and the reality that will be with us for the stretch of the hockey season.
The Attack brass & scouting staff spent last weekend in Whitby at the Silver Stick Tournament which General Manager Dale DeGray cites as the best tournament of the year for identifying and evaluating eligible players for the 2019 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.
While the Minor Midget prospects were a major topic of discussion over the weekend at Whitby for the brass, so too was the conversation pertaining to the here & now with the existing club in Owen Sound.
Recently when Kingston sniper Jason Robertson and defender Jacob Paquette were dealt to the Niagara IceDogs for a pair of players and almost a dozen picks, you can bet DeGray's cell phone, office phone, home phone and bat phone were ringing within seconds.
Robertson & Paquette are very good players, no question, but any combination of 2 key forwards & 2 key defenders from the Owen Sound's current roster are more valuable, far more valuable in my view, biased as I may be.
You might think that with that kind of core, the logical step for Owen Sound would be to acquire players to supplement the current squad, but as we said last week, the Attack have little to no currency in terms of draft picks or prospects.
I don't need a confirmation from anybody to know that London is one of the teams calling, maybe with frequency, trying to pry a player, players, maybe Owen Sound's best player away. Unspoken, but it was written ALL over the London faces Friday night when the Attack were in London.
Ottawa too. They've got to do something. The 67's are having an excellent year and have stockpiled FIVE second rounders for the April Priority Selection.
Nobody needs, or can use, 5 second rounders, but the Attack who have ZERO 2nd rounders for the upcoming THREE drafts could use a few of Ottawa's selections and the 67's have made no secret of a player they covet currently skating in the Scenic City.
It's bothersome to know good players, and good citizens, who have played hard & well here for years will be elsewhere, maybe by this time next week, certainly within 2 weeks, but that's the current reality for the Owen Sound Attack.
