" Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire. "
The Owen Sound Attack will hit the 1/3 mark of the Ontario Hockey League season this week with games tonight against Sarnia, tomorrow at Peterborough and then the Cubs for Cancer game Saturday at home against Flint.
As play begins today, the Attack, on a 2 game win streak, sit just 2 points back of the London Knights for 1st in the Midwest Division and within 4 points of the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds in the Western Conference.
To the credit of the Attack, they've achieved this position without overage defenceman Sean Durzi for most of the last 3 weekends, and they've achieved this position in spite of a compacted schedule, a schedule we roasted on Monday, so I promise not to go back there.
These have been good to great years for OHL Hockey in Owen Sound; the only team to beat Memorial Cup Champion London in the 2016 playoffs, the Western Conference Finalists to Erie in 2017 & last year within one game, maybe within one goal, of upsetting the # 1 ranked Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds.
But in the here & now if you're the Attack, if you're General manager Dale DeGray, what's your move ?
Naturally, you'd like to upgrade & bolster your lineup to stay firmly in contention.
But is that possible ? Is that a reality ?
I'd say no.
Owen Sound's 2nd round draft picks for the next 3 seasons belong to Saginaw, North Bay & Ottawa, plus this year's 2nd rounder was a no-show, so that's a non-factor..
While there's progression and development, it's not unfair to state the Attack aren't brimming with high profile young prospects, and so there's another avenue to upgrading that's apparently blocked.
Well, the Attack will tell you they're only focused on the Sarnia Sting tonight at the Bayshore at 7.
After that, what transpires with the makeup of the club is unknown, maybe even within the upper circles at this moment.
