Open Mic For Mental Health

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

Tonight, I'm going to skip my usual Monday night hockey and head to the Best Western Inn on the Bay.

There's an " Open Mic for Mental Health " being staged this evening featuring a terrific lineup of guest speakers, some of whom you know well, some of whom you might not know, but all of whom have intriguing stories to tell.

Ben Fanelli played for the Kitchener Rangers and had his OHL days interrupted by a devastating hit.

Brett MacLean of Port Elgin had embarked on an NHL career before a health issue, right here in Owen Sound, halted his path immediately.

Brock McGillis played goal in the OHL at both Windsor and Sault Ste Marie plus at the semi-pro level, dealing internally with questions of his sexual preference throughout.

And Matt McCoy is from the Addict's Attic and that label illustrates what he's dealt with and what he continues to battle.

The group of speakers are varied in their experience, but the common goal for them and for Wes for Youth Online is to continually make progress in terms of discussing mental health ailments, issues and concerns.

And they are making progress, certainly in terms of having a stage to speak from and deal with mental health.

Wes for Youth originated with a goal of assisting youngsters in Grey-Bruce.

The boundaries of Grey-Bruce have been vastly expanded to include and counsel youngsters not only in Ontario, but as far away as Europe.

The cost for " Open Mic for Mental Health " is $ 5.

Tickets are available at the door with the doors at the Best Western Inn on the Bay opening at 6:30 pm this evening.

Have a great day.

I'm Fred Wallace
