Happy Halloween

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire "

Happy Halloween.

I thought that I'd tricked Mother Nature this year during the local cross country season which featured 4 big race days, rather than the usual 3.

On an annual basis, I find myself at the Georgian Bay Coyotes Race in Meaford, the Bluewater East Elementary Meet at the Kiwanis Complex in Owen Sound and the Bob Atkinson Memorial Meet for Bluewater West Elementary students at Saugeen Bluffs.

It's a given that at least one, if not ALL of those races will encounter bad weather.

However in 2018, the Coyote Race had just 10 minutes of drizzle, the Bluewater East Meet was staged on a very nice day & the Bob Atkinson Meet was 26 degrees and gorgeous, so I thought I'd wiggled my way out of negative weather.

But, the Coyotes had more event to stage, the Ontario Cross Country Championships last Saturday again at the Georgian Bay Community School Athletic Field and Georgian Trail.

Naturally, as soon as the first race commenced, so too did the nasty weather conditions.

The wind came up, the rain came down and in between the drizzle and sleet came at you sideways thanks to Georgian Bay. It wasn't miserable...but it wasn't Saugeen Bluffs that's for sure.

To the credit of the runners, weather had minimal impact, especially in the Atom Boys and Senior Boys Races.

In Atom, the two leaders locked arms in the stretch with one competitor hitting the deck just before the finish.

In the Senior Boys race, the runner up made a desperate charge at the end and attempted to dive across the finish line.

The Georgian Bay Coyotes had a successful day on the course winning 2 gold and 1 bronze individual medals as well as a gold, silver and bronze in team competition

And equally significant, the Coyotes organization proved beyond a doubt that they can host a Provincial Championship successfully, regardless of the weather

Happy Halloween
