No McClure...No Problem

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

Saturday night a truly remarkable harness racing story was unfolding.

Driver Bob McClure who grew up at Hanover Raceway, got his start at Hanover Raceway and, while rising to the peak of his profession, has continually expressed his respect and passion for Hanover Raceway, was racing at the Hambletonian Day at the Meadowlands.

And he was having a pretty good day in New Jersey, especially when he scored the win with a 50-1 longshot named " Dream Together "

The victory for " Dream Together " came in the Steele Memorial with a purse of $ 150,000, or so. It was a lucrative race on a BIG day for the Meadowlands.

But McClure also had a drive scheduled for later that Hanover Raceway.

McClure was scheduled to be with " Joey Bats " in the " Dream of Glory " Final and so when his duties were completed in East Rutherford, he hopped a plane and jetted for Hanover.

He never made it.

Reportedly landing in Toronto around 8:30 pm Saturday night, there was NO way Bob McClure could get to Hanover for the 9:35 scheduled start of the " Dream of Glory ".

McClure is fast.....just not that fast !!

Thus, Hanover regular Bruce Richardson was tapped to replace McClure in the sulky for the biggest race of the year for the Grey County oval.

In fairness, Richardson has had a successful career in the sport and has been the top driver & a perpetual contender at Hanover Raceway for quite some time.

In rapid fashion, Richardson coming out the #6 hole with " Joey Bats " grabbed the early lead and was never headed, winning the " Dream of Glory " convincingly in 1-57 & 2, almost 2 seconds ahead of the runner up.

In the winner's circle afterwards, Bruce Richardson admitted it was a special victory for him, winning the " Dream of Glory " for the first time in his career.

And that was a nice story.

Truthfully, it would have been a more remarkable story had Bob McClure been able to make it from New Jersey to Hanover and won with " Joey Bats " at the 2018 " Dream of Glory ".

I'm Fred Wallace
