Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
Earlier this week, a handful of swimmers from the Owen Sound Otters landed in Nova Scotia and are competing at the Special Olympic National Games.
From the Otters, A.J. Band, Jessica Belrose, Jamie Lee Ward & Jonathan Wardrop are representing the Otters and Ontario.
Most of the Owen Sound swimmers will compete in 2 disciplines at the meet; front crawl & back crawl, plus Jamie Lee Ward will also swim in the butterfly.
The cycle of activity for the Special Olympians is exactly similar to the time frame the Olympic athletes follow.
A year from now, the World Special Olympic Games will be staged and Otters coach Dianne Speed believes it's possible that 2 of her swimmers will be able to advance to the Worlds.
And then once the World Games are concluded in 2019, the cycle resumes again with preparation and then competition at the provincial level.
So while it's understandable that the Otters in Nova Scotia this week are jacked about the National Championships, in fact keeping their focus is likely as challenging as any aspect of the meet, you also have to admire the length of time these four swimmers have put into training & meets to get to this point; Local, Regional, Provincial and now the Nationals.
Good luck to A.J. Band, Jessica Belrose, Jamie Lee Ward, Jonathan Wardrop and coach Dianne Speed of the Owen Sound Otters.
I'm Fred Wallace
