Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
Twenty years ago, Tiger Woods had a major impact on golf and heightened golf interest, likely as high as it ever was in my life time.
And while maybe it's not a " mania " like " Tigermania ", there's something to be said for the results Canadians are putting up on the PGA & the LPGA circuits this year and the impact they're likely having on golfers, especially young golfers across the country.
Brooke Henderson, Alena Sharp and Orangeville's Brittany Marchand on the LPGA Tour.
Plus, 26 year old Corey Conners from Listowel has had an excellent year amongst the PGA pros.
At the grassroots level, it's notable that the Investors Group Ontario Men's Amateur Championship begins today at St Thomas Golf & Country
The star attraction is NHL referee Garrett Rank playing for the Elmira Golf Club who earlier this year played with the best at the US Open.
From our region, Josiah Dixon of Cobble Beach Golf Links will compete while Morgan Rubes who plays around the corner at the Georgian Bay Club is also in the field for the 4 day event.
Finally from a local golf standpoint, Scenic City Golf Course in Owen Sound is hosting the first stop on the Grey Bruce Junior Golf Tour today.
The tour qualifying event was last week at Whispering Hills in Hanover and Sean Tippin who was a 2017 champion turned in the low score with a 73.
Other divisional winners in the qualifier were Elizabeth & Will Salnek from Pike Lake Golf Club plus Elliot McCarey from the Southport Golf Club who was the low shooter in Bantam
The Grey Bruce Junior Golf Tour has 7 stops including today's event at Scenic, winding its way through the summer to the finale August 21st at Legacy Ridge.
