Bench Talk / Off The Wire

Caps Can Clinch

By Fred Wallace

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

The Stanley Cup Final resumes tonight in Las Vegas with the Washington Capitals on the verge of their first ever NHL Championship.

The Capitals lead the best of 7; 3 games to 1 over the Golden Knights and need just one more victory to claim the title.

............I don't think they'll get it tonight.

The Capitals dropped Vegas 6-2 in Game 4, but had the Knights be sharper, or more fortunate, in the first 10 minutes of that game, all bets would be off.

The Golden Knights hit the post at least 4 times & the image of James Neal missing a WIDE OPEN net in the early going was a factor, among many, for Vegas losing and the Caps grabbing the 3-1 series lead.

Also in the 3rd period, I thought the Golden Knights made a massive push to get back into it but buckled when Washington scored the 5th marker to seal the deal.

Washington won Game 4 with a lethal power play and they'll be a force to reckon with tonight. But in the NHL of today with video and adjustments taking place on a shift by shift basis, I'm sure the Golden Knights will have a counter if & when they go shorthanded.

Finally, do we want to talk about historic track records ?

Washington is on the brink of a Championship that's long overdue, they have a 40+ plus year history of not winning.

What does Vegas have to lose in this their first ever season and now facing elimination for the 1st time EVER ?

Not much.

And that's why I'm calling for Vegas to win tonight to send the Stanley Cup Final back to Washington on Sunday night.

I'm Fred Wallace
