Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
The backs of the Owen Sound Junior B NorthStars are up against the wall and tonight when they host the Guelph Regals it's a case of do or die for both teams.
And truthfully, it appears the team that " doesn't " this evening will die, likely sooner than later, and even the odds for the team that does win tonight isn't outstanding.
We've done this before, but let's have another look.
There are 8 playoff spots available each year in the Ontario Lacrosse Western Conference.
The division leaders get in, so that speaks to 3 spots; Six Nations, Elora and in all probability, Wallaceburg.
The 3 teams that finish 2nd in their respective divisions also advance and it looks quite certain that those spots belong to Windsor, Hamilton & Orangeville.
Which leaves 2 spots essentially up for grabs and neither Guelph nor Owen Sound has done enough grabbing.
Both St Catharines & Niagara have 1 more point than Owen Sound...BUT those two centres have 1) played less games than Owen Sound & 2 ) more importantly, beaten the Junior Stars head to head.
The Junior NorthStars have made the playoffs the past two years and have acquitted themselves well in the post season which created significant hope for this season.
However, hope is the operative word tonight, as another crucial loss on home floor to Guelph this evening will essentially gas the NorthStars.
And even if Owen Sound scores the victory, they'll still need to dangle and score some upsets in their final 5 outings to make it 3 straight years of getting to the playoffs.
Game time tonight for the Regals & Junior Stars is 8 pm at the Harry Lumley-Bayshore.
Keep in mind, the Liuna 1059 Senior NorthStars will be at home on Friday night against KW
