Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
Finally, the Finals.
The Stanley Cup Final to determine the National Hockey League's Champion begins tonight pitting about as unlikely a pair of teams as you can imagine going head to head for the title.
The Eastern Conference Champion Washington Capitals who have never won anything in spite of many promising seasons are in the Championship Final.
Remarkably, expectations for this Capitals team was far lower than previous editions of the club.
Those expectations looked accurate when they dropped the first two games of the playoffs at home to Columbus.
They looked realistic when Pittsburgh had the upper hand in round 2.
And it certainly looked like another fold job was afoot when Tampa Bay won 3 in a row to take a 3-2 lead in the Eastern Conference Final.
Amazingly the Capitals dodged, rallied, regroup, survived and advanced to the Stanley Cup.
But amazing doesn't BEGIN to tell the story of the Capitals opponents; the Vegas Golden Knights.
An EXPANSION team that surprisingly won their division in the regular season and then eliminated teams with pedigree in LA & San Jose and then pushed aside the Great White ( North ) Hope, Winnipeg.
A first year team that threatens to bankrupt the bookmakers in the very city in which they compete, should they win 4 more games.
What would be more astonishing ? Washington ? Or Vegas ?
Enjoy the Stanley Cup.
