Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".
When I get my exercise indoors at Owen Sound Fitness & Training, I have a routine to help me grind it out.
As I work away on the stepper or the climbing apparatus, I'll watch the in-house TVs, which are almost always on the sports channels, almost always showing a game of some description, be it baseball, basketball, hockey, football, whatever.
The deal I've made with myself is that I will not turn my attention away from the screen and onto the time elapsed, the distance traveled or the speed gauge until the TV goes into a commercial break.
Trust me, it works- the hour seems to fly by using this method.
Recently, I was climbing away watching a European Soccer match.
The entire first half went commercial free, almost 50 minutes uninterrupted.
And while the time elapsed was terrific, it made me wonder why can't North American sports be more like European Soccer ?
Watching the game, there was no shortage of advertisers; the field was surrounded by corporate ads, the jerseys were sponsored and wherever the game was played, the place was packed, so I don't think it's a question of money, or maybe it is.
Regardless, while I'm not a soccer fan per se, I do lament that North American Big 4 Team sports don't have the same TV format as European Soccer.
