Wild, wacky, crazy -- the Owen Sound Attack 2017-18 campaign was one that sticks out.
One of the all time craziest hockey seasons in the history of the Owen Sound Ontario Hockey League franchise concluded, almost in fitting fashion, with a bizarre 9-7 defeat in Game 7 at Sault Ste Marie in the middle of the month.
Let's recap the season........
The coach Owen Sound initially wanted to replace Ryan McGill, Dave Barr, went to San Jose in the NHL.
The European the Attack wanted to draft was scooped up by London, yet that player ended up in the NHL with New Jersey and never played in the OHL.
The European the Attack DID draft wasn't deemed good enough to make the team and was cut quickly.
The Goalie Owen Sound wanted to acquire was dealt by the Greyhounds to London. In the playoffs, the Attack swept Joseph Raaymakers and the Knights.
The Goalie Owen Sound started with walked away from the club in late November, leaving underage Mack Guzda to hold the fort for several weeks.
Kevin Hancock was struck by a puck, broke his hand, and the Attack promptly lost 13 of their next 14 games, including a home & home with Kitchener which essentially cost Owen Sound the division title.
The injury to Hancock wasn't nearly as bizarre as the Attack player who was injured at a Family Skate when he was slew-footed by a fun-loving teammate.
More bizarre, Bev the bus driver assisted Sudbury Police in taking down a fleeing felon on a frigid Sunday morning. The felon had no shoes & no shirt or jacket when blocked by Bev and then tackled by the constable in snowy, -18 degree conditions.
The Attack were blown out at Sarnia and snowed in at Erie.
Somewhere along the side of Highway 401 are two large yellow fans designed to dry gloves & equipment, fans that somehow tumbled out of the cargo area after another blown 3 goal lead at Ottawa.
The Attack gave up a league low 6 shorthanded goals against......two of the 6 goals came in a 24 second span at London.
And in the end, a 3 goal explosion in 61 seconds, the type of rapid onslaught that afflicted the Attack all year, paved the way for a Greyhounds Game 7 victory, otherwise the peculiar proceedings for Owen Sound might still be unfolding.
See ya next year.
