OHL Coaching Carousel

Is Ryan McGill Leaving ?

Length:

Hi, this is Fred Wallace with " Off the Wire ".

Among the primary topics of conversation for Owen Sound Attack fans these days is the future of coach Ryan McGill.

When the question is posed to me, ' will he be back this Fall  ? ', the answer I deliver is, " I don't know ".

But I do know two things;

#1) McGill, through his work with the Attack and his previous experience, has put himself in a win-win situation.

He's an attractive candidate for bigger coaching posts right now, but also has the option of leading what should be a cracker jack of team in Owen Sound for the upcoming OHL season.

So, would Ryan McGill not be in exactly the same solid position ( or better ) a year from now IF the Attack have a season similar to, or better than, last year ?

And #2), I know this; it's inevitable that he will depart at some point.

I don't have the exact statistic, but I'd bet after any given OHL season, 50% of the coaches go elsewhere, or are asked to go elsewhere.

Already this off season; Kris Knoblauch, Jarrod Skalde, Jeff Brown, David Matsos and Rocky Thompson have departed their respective OHL clubs in a variety of scenarios.

That means, based on average, I expect 5 more alterations before September.

It also means that 15 OHL coaches remain in place.

Doing the math, if you remove long termers Stan Butler and Dale Hunter from the equation, the average length of service of the remaining 13 OHL coaches is.................just barely over 2 years.

Ryan McGill has been the Attack coach for.............barely 2 years.

So coach McGill may or may not be behind the Attack bench come late August, but the statistical trend for OHL coaches indicates he's a strong candidate to depart sooner rather than later.

I'm Fred Wallace
